Ey up! We’ve just finished up the perfect 2 weeks in Japan’s tropical paradise, Okinawa. All without breaking the bank!

Cheap fares, no crowds, and perfect beach weather!

Zamami Island

We flew to Okinawa from Osaka at the beginning of April and spent 2 weeks island hopping, snorkelling, and stumbling on opening of the beach festivals.

Is April the best time to visit Okinawa?

Short answer, yes.

(As long as you don’t make this mistake that will cost you an arm and a leg.)

Hiking on Tokashiki Island

April, more specifically, early April is considered the shoulder season in Okinawa, Japan. Warm, but pleasant weather perfect for outdoor activities before the intense summer heat.

The end of April however, is the beginning of Golden Week; a major holiday in Japan that brings heavy crowds, significantly higher costs, and sold out accommodation (especially on the smaller islands).

So if you’re planning a trip to Okinawa in April, and want lower costs and less people make sure to visit early on!

Golden Week Dates

2026: 29th April – 6th May

2027: 29th April – 5th May

2028: 29th April – 7th May

Why You Should Visit in April

While it’s warm in April, it’s not yet cracking flags! Temperatures are usually low to mid 20’s, so it’s the perfect weather for hiking / cycling around the islands.

The beaches ain’t absolutely rammed! You can relax on the white sand beaches with only a handful of others. Plus, beaches in Okinawa do not have lifeguards till mid-April; perfect for those of us who enjoy snorkelling out of the designated area.

Swimming with sea turtles in Zamami

The opening of the beach festival is in mid-April, marking the start of lifeguards on the beach. But this is also a day where locals get together for the first ocean swims of the year amongst other traditions! We happened to be in Zamami for this, and let’s just say it’s nothing like we expected!

Tight Travellers Experience in Okinawa

We just spent 2 weeks gallivanting around Japan’s “hidden paradise” and honestly we cannot wait to go back. We went to 3 islands and barely scratched the surface!

Our 2 Week Itinerary

Fly to Naha – Okinawa’s main island and sometimes, the only one people visit! We spent 5 days here and would recommend you hire a car to explore more of the island.

We then got a ferry over to Tokashiki Island where we spent 4 days.

How to explore Tokashiki, the unexplored Japanese paradise

Looking for a hidden tropical paradise? Look no further. We’ve found a bloody good destination for your next jollies! White sandy beaches, Kerama blue waters, and no crowds. We’ve piled all the information into this mini guide, you’re welcome. This is Tokashiki Island, tried and tested by two tight travellers.

We spent 5 days exploring the nearby Zamami Island before heading back to Naha for 1 night and flying out.

And that is only 3 islands out of Okinawa’s 160! We will 100% be going back to these beautiful islands in Japan. Most likely in early April again, for the perfect weather and to avoid the crowds!
