Ey up! Well done you for expanding your Japan itinerary past the classic ‘Golden Route’ – Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto.

We just spent 2 weeks frolicking around Okinawa: from the American Village in Naha to crystal clear water in the Kerama Islands – and we didn’t even scratch the service.

Here are 9 of the best things to do in Okinawa.

Use our code ‘TIGHTTRAVELLERS5’ for a couple a quid off with Get Your Guide!

1. North Naha Sightseeing Tour: includes pick up, transport between Nago Pineapple Park, Kouri Island, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, and the popular ‘elephant rock’.

Hiring a car is the best way to get around Naha, especially if you want to explore the North of the island! So if you aren’t comfortable doing this, a full day tour is the best way to see the sights.

2. South Naha Sightseeing Tour: includes pick up and transport between Shurijo Castle, Okinawa World, and the Cornerstone of Peace.

4. Coastal camping: camp on Ama beach Zamami island. Fall asleep to the sound of waves, and wake up to next to the beautiful blue water with chances to swim with sea turtles. This ain’t for luxury travellers; this is rough sleeping, minging facilities, and no leccy. Worth it?

You tell me. If you want more information, check out our Zamami island blog.

5. Do an introductory scuba diving course: the Kerama blue water is the perfect place for your first dive, and there is such diverse marine life. I know, everyone goes to Koh Tao, Thailand now – which is exactly why you should do it here! A lot less crowds and just as beautiful!

6. Kayak through mangroves: glide over the tranquil river, navigating through mangroves and spotting small creatures along the way.

7. Snorkel at Ishigaki Island: set off to Hamajima Island (also known as Phantom Island as it is only visible at low tide) and snorkel in the clear water. This is really off the beaten path in Japan, so make sure to explore the island as well!

8. Firefly Night Walk: move away from the crowds, explore the jungle along a mountain trail, and experience the Yaeyama-hime fireflies. Peak season is usually mid March to late April and only lasts about 30-40 minutes after sunset! Phones are not allowed on the tours as it can disrupt the mating process, so you get to completely be in the moment!

9. SUP and snorkel with sea turtles in Miyakojima: paddle board and snorkel in the crystal clear waters around Okinawa’s remote islands.

Remember to stay connected with an e-sim on your trip to Japan, especially if you’re staying on remote islands. We shopped around and found the best prices on Trip.com.
