Day 5, and we finally felt ready for a proper outing. Public transport was our choice again — the metro got us to the Ancient City, cheap and cheerful, just how we like it.

The Ancient City

We opted to walk around the Ancient City, saving a few baht and getting plenty of steps in. The place is massive, full of scaled-down replicas of Thailand’s historic temples, palaces, and landmarks. It felt like a mini road trip through the country’s history — no queues, no crowds, just wandering and gawping at everything from golden pagodas to old wooden houses.

People-watching was a treat: tourists posing in oversized hats, kids running around shrieking, locals quietly tending to temples. Proper sightseeing without the fuss.

By late afternoon, we headed to the bus station to catch our sleeper bus to Chiang Mai. Bags packed, tickets ready, and wallets still happy, we settled in for the journey north. It’s always a bit of an adventure on Thai sleeper buses — tight spaces, curious fellow passengers, and a chance for a few hours’ nap before the next leg of the trip.

We booked with 12Go

All in all, a day well spent — history, walking, and public transport thrifty-ness all wrapped into one. A proper Tight Travellers sort of day!
