Mind Day Hostel, Bangkok: An Honest Review

Reyt or shyte? A Yorkshire couple’s no-nonsense take.

Mind Day Hostel

Ey up, folks — we spent a few nights at Mind Day Hostel in Bangkok, just a stone’s throw from Khao San Road, and here’s our proper Yorkshire verdict.

We paid around £10.52 a night, plus a 200 THB deposit for the key card. No special deals or discounts were offered when we booked. Cheap, but as ever, you get what you pay for.

Room

We booked a double bed room with a shared bathroom. Tiny, this one — bed pushed into three walls, window with no view, felt a bit like sleeping in a cupboard. Cleanliness was alright for the most part, though black mould on the ceiling caught our eye — not exactly five-star. Noise levels? Outside road noise was proper noticeable, upstairs occasional creaks and chatter, but the AC worked well, which helped with the heat.

Room 201

The bed was basically a mattress on the floor. Not too bad, surprisingly, and the one pillow did its job. Bedding looked clean and felt okay; towels were a bit stained. Storage? Forget it- no wardrobe, just a couple of outlets by the bed, and a water cooler outside if you fancied a drink. Lockers were available for dorms, which is fine if you’re sharing.

Shared room

Bathroom

The shared bathroom was… functional. Not really clean, and a bit cramped with shower and toilet in one unit. Water temp and pressure were okay. They provided shower gel and shampoo, but no toilet roll– although that was later found tucked away in the kitchen, FYI. Towels? Stained, as mentioned.

Facilities & Amenities

Cooking facilities (if you dare use) are minimal: microwave, kettle, shared. Common areas had plenty of seating for chilling. Laundry was 50 THB per kg, Wi-Fi was free but intermittent, and bike parking was available on the street.

Staff & Service

Staff were generally helpful and polite, check-in/check-out went smoothly, and housekeeping kept the basics tidy, though nothing to write home about.

Location

Absolutely spot on if you want Khao San Road on your doorstep — bars, street food, and nightlife all within a stroll. Tuk-tuk to the Skytrain station cost 160 THB, then 45 THB per person to the airport — about 45 minutes total. Local restaurants and cafes like Hong Kong Dimsum and Noodles are right across the road. Safety in the area was fine, though it’s busy and noisy, especially at night.

Ambiance & Aesthetics

Decor is functional, nothing fancy, lighting and vibe are simple, hostel-style. Online photos make the rooms look a bit more spacious than they actually are. Booking and cancellation were easy enough.

Tight Travellers Verdict

Reyt or Shyte? Mind Day Hostel is Reyt for location and budgetShyte for comfort and cleanliness.

Cost: £10.52 per night + 200 THB deposit

Best for: Backpackers or couples who don’t mind tiny rooms and shared bathrooms
Pros: Prime Khao San location, cheap, functional AC, decent staff
Cons: Tiny room, black mould, stained towels, noisy, minimal storage
Overall: 4/10 — Cheap, central, and gets the job done. Don’t expect comfort or luxury, but for tight travellers wanting a base near Khao San, it’s proper handy.
